It is important to identify how computational thinking fits into your existing overarching programs and initiatives. Making strategic alignments to existing programs can help the development and implementation of the pathway to be successful. It is also one way to avoid “initiative fatigue” and garner support from teachers. As a leadership team, begin by taking stock of the existing factors that can help shape your pathway.

As you review your groundwork, ask yourself: 

  • Why are we integrating computational thinking K-12 in our district? 
  • What related standards (e.g., NGSS), programs (e.g., Portrait of a Graduate), or themes (e.g., STEAM, design thinking, maker learning) has our district implemented previously? 
  • How can we build on initiatives that are currently working well?
